  • The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Port Harcourt confirms the 2025/2026 Premiership season runs from 26 November to 22 April.
  • The 20-club top flight confirms a highly competitive campaign with a significant six teams facing relegation at the end of the season.

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially confirmed the start date for its highly anticipated 2025/2026 season.

Following resolutions passed at the Annual General Assembly (AGA) held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the NWFL Premiership campaign is set to kick off on November 26, 2025.

According to the calendar unveiled during the high-level meeting, the season will run for five months, concluding on April 22, 2026.

Clubs will face a tight schedule before the Christmas break, with four match weeks planned before league action temporarily halts.

The competition is scheduled to resume in the new year on January 7, 2026, as the 20 participating clubs continue their pursuit of the coveted title.

The 2025/2026 campaign, featuring a total of 20 clubs in the Premiership, is set to be one of the most competitive yet due to significant structural changes approved by the AGA.

In a move designed to enhance sporting merit and intensity, a total of six teams will be relegated from the top-tier Premiership at the close of the season.

This substantial relegation quota underscores the need for consistency and high performance from all participating sides.

Conversely, the NWFL confirmed that only two clubs will secure promotion from the NWFL Championship to the Premiership, tightening the gateway to the elite division.

Similarly, two teams will drop from the Championship to the NWFL Nationwide League, ensuring mobility and competition across all three tiers of Nigerian women’s football.

Bayelsa Queens are the defending champions from the previous season, clinching their 6th league title which was also their first trophy since 2022.
